Unlike our buds on the west-coast, NYC isn’t going to let a pandemic scare us away from celebrating the Devil’s Night Out. When questioned about a ban on trick-or-treating, Gov. Cuomo responded “If you want to go for a walk with your child through the neighborhood, I’m not going to tell you you can’t take your child through the neighborhood.” In other words, trick-or-treat at your own risk. Luckily masks are in this year!

The Spirit of Halloween Will be in NYC
In an Open Letter to the Halloween Community, Jeanne Fleming, Director of the NYC Village Halloween Parade announced that despite the annual gathering’s cancelation “we are going to do a trick that will be a treat! Like the Parade itself—which is a spontaneous gathering of people, our Halloween treat will be spontaneous and unannounced and unique to our night Parade.” Keep your eyes peeled and let us know if you spot any spooky treats from the NYC Village Parade.

Remember when Netflix and Chill was a novelty? Though you probably feel like you’ve run out of all the shows and movies on your must-see list, this handy guide from Thrillist has you covered. According to Farmers’ Almanac, “For more than half a century, whenever two full Moons appear in a single month, the second full Moon is christened a ‘Blue Moon.’ When you look at the full Moon on Halloween night, it won’t appear blue in color but you’ll be looking at something pretty uncommon. A full Moon on Halloween occurs roughly once every 19 years”.

Here’s a quick witchy tip from Sin Dee:
Back when witchcraft was still taboo (before TikTok witches existed) you had to get creative with camouflaging spells and tools into your everyday surroundings. One great thing about Halloween is the instant hidden candle holder others call, the Jack O’ Lantern. After carving your pumpkins with the kids, use this opportunity to prep a fancy ritual candle for Samhain. Choose any color corresponding with your needs. The idea is you can get as wild as use want with your candle adding feathers, carvings, charms, etc. You don’t have to hold back from what you include on this candle since it will be hidden from the naked eye. Once you’re ready and whatever candle magick you chose has been cast, move the candle to your favorite Jack O’Lantern (preferably one you carved). Tuck the little spark of magick in and set at the entrance of your home or near your altar. Visitors will never know the true magic of your Halloween decorations.
GWAR-oween Becomes GWAR-antine
Quarantined in their home-away-from-space Virginia, GWAR hasn’t let COVID-19 censor their political views. If anything, they’ve embraced the use of videos to infiltrate our safe homes. From an interview on CNN, to teasing the release of the 30th Anniversary “Scumdogs of the Universe” Box Set on Twitter. Though New Yorkers won’t get to dance in blood at the annual Gwaroween show, Gwarantine can be just as fun with a little inspiration from our favorite murderous aliens.

Maybe there will be a recorded version of the Drive-In special feature for us East-Coasters in time for All Hallows’ Eve? Let’s be honest, we’re all just waiting to see which POTUS they decapitate next. Until then, a good binge-fest of all their GWAR-antine antics should get you in the mood for the spooky season.
THE OBITUARY SECTION
Another option for some Halloween headbanging is Obituary‘s 3-part concert mini-series. Starting Oct 17th, the death metal legends will pump out live stream concerts during the Halloween season. You’ll have to shell out $15 per “ticket” but admit it, pre-COVID days this was a killer of a deal for a show.
Don’t Ditch the Costumes
You might not have anywhere to go this Halloween, but that doesn’t mean you have to ditch dressing up on October 31st. We recommend you use this odd Halloween season to embrace a more comfy costume option.
The Onesie for All
Sin Dee is known to strut around her home in footsie PJs from Fall through Winter. Aside from the nostalgia, these days the youthful designs double as instant costumes! Gone are the days of rummaging the Youth Clearance racks for a XXL union suit. The possibilities are endless including footless options, so you can throw on some boots for your beer run. If you’re feeling extra sloth-y we recommend you opt for the butt-flap. Do we really need to explain?
Tip: Now’s the time to splurge on that ridiculously cool PPE mask you spotted for sale on the corner of your block. Grab one that matches your onesie to top off your look when you run outside for Halloween essentials.
