Sin Dee NYC’s Guide to Ostara (Spring Equinox)

Here comes the Sun, Sinners! This Saturday, March 20th marks the Vernal Equinox for 2021— the official start of Spring. In addition to leaving gloomy days behind us, this date also holds spiritual significance on the Wiccan Wheel of the Year. Witchy or not, check out our guide to this year’s Spring Equinox. Including something for everyone from family-friendly activities, to more traditional pagan practices.

For modern Pagans, Ostara signals the end of the passive dark half of the year and the beginning of the active light half of the year. Signs of fertility and new life have signaled the return of spring.

Eggs Aren’t Just for Easter:

The pagan influences of most holidays in North America are still evident today. Just head to your local pharmacy shop and check out the seasonal décor on sale. What exactly do eggs, bunnies, and flowers have to do with the resurrection of Christ? Here are some other witchy ways of looking at those Easter themed products and decorations.

One of my favorite things about being Wiccan is the way in which you can repurpose just about anything for magical purposes. During Easter put some thought into your use of eggs. Aside from just dying and consuming you can create candle holders for your altar, or flower pots for your spring sprouts.

In my household we also use those fun plastic Easter Eggs as talisman shakers. Just fill with herbs, symbolic trinkets, and a written intention. Glue together and decorate the outside. All year long when you need a spiritual boost for that set intention, just give your egg a Shake Shake Shake!

Got little witches at home? You can merge your modern and pagan worlds in this year’s Easter celebration with these adorable Ostara coloring Egg Holders. They’re free to download and easy to use.

Instructions:
Color the pictures and cut them out. Cut a cardboard tube left over from a roll of toilet paper into 1-inch rings.  Next, glue the colored decorations around the rings.  When they’re dry, use them as a bases to hold dyed egg so they stand up.

Balancing Act:

The Vernal Equinox is an impressive point on the Wheel of the Year. According to the Farmer’s Almanac, “The word equinox comes from the Latin words for “equal night”—aequus (equal) and nox (night). On the equinox, the length of day and night is nearly equal in all parts of the world.” Keeping this in mind, more seasoned Brujas can use Tarot Spreads to cast light on which parts of your life need more balance. You can also create Spell Jars full of Spring herbs and crystal, with the focus of creating more balance in your home. This is also a perfect time to use your pendulum or start working with one.

Other magical tips:

  • “Spring Cleaning” isn’t just physical. While you sweep your home envision pushing out all negativity. Sweep towards your front and back doors, and out into the open if possible (if you’re in an apartment dispose of the trash ASAP). That’s “Spring Cleansing“!

  • Flowers and plants represent fertility, rebirth, and renewal. If you don’t have the space or patience to plant your own seeds, buy yourself a nice bouquet (or more). Place one on your altar. Place others around your home where you need to hit the “reset button” the most.
